In some cases the labor needs to be started by induction of labor. For the induction to be successful, the birth canal and especially the cervix need to be sufficiently prepared. If they are not, their preparation has to be supported. The preparation increases the success rate of the labor induction and shortens the time to delivery.

One of the possibilities to prepare the birth canal is the use of osmotic dilators. They are thin rods made of material which absorb fluids after their insertion in the cervix, gradually increase their diameter and thus open the cervix. At the same time, as they dilate the cervical tissue, they stimulate the release of hormones (prostaglandins) and the cervix matures naturally. Usually, 2-4 rods are applied, the appropriate number is determined by the physician according to the status of the birth canal maturity.

Please, ask your physician for more information.
