What is cervical ripening

Procedure of artificial cervical ripening

However, if your cervix shows no signs of dilation and effacement (softening, opening, thinning) to allow your baby to leave the womb and enter the birth canal, your clinician will need to get the ripening rolling, so the labor can be induced. This process typically takes 12-24 hours to complete.

There are several ways your clinician may suggest ripening your cervix. The most common methods are mechanical dilators (Dilapan-S®or balloons) or medication (in a form of tablets, gel or pessary).
