What is induction of labor

How does the labor induction work?

The most common method to induce the labor is by administration of a medication called oxytocin (Pitocin). This works only if your cervix is already ripened, therefore cervical ripening before labor induction is mandatory!

Oxytocin causes contractions, these will with time come more often and become stronger as the labor begins and progresses.  Along with oxytocin, many times your doctor or midwife may break your waters, which allows the baby’s head to push down on the cervix while the oxytocin causes contractions.

Together this process will help to advance your labor. But for the labor induction, first the cervix needs to be ripened!
