What is induction of labor

When the labor is induced?

An induction of labor is a process, when your doctor or midwife chooses to start your labor before it happens naturally on its own.  There are many reasons why you may need to have your labor induced.  The most common reason is that you are still pregnant and your cervix is not ready for labor.  Usually around 40-41 weeks of pregnancy your doctor or midwife will talk to you about the possibility of an induction.

Sometimes you may be experiencing complications already during pregnancy, such as high blood pressure (preeclampsia, eclampsia), gestational diabetes, issues with the placenta or problems with amniotic fluid (low volume or infection).

These reasons can make it risky to continue the pregnancy, therefore it is better for you to deliver your baby now rather than wait for the labor to come spontaneously.
