What is cervical ripening?

Why is cervical ripening necessary?

Examination of a pregnant woman with a stethoscope

Cervical ripening is a normal process your cervix goes through naturally as it prepares for labour.  As your cervix ripens, the tissue becomes soft and flexible. This is important, because the cervix needs to be ripened, so it is able to shorten and open more easily during labour, ensuring the highest possibility of vaginal birth.

Only after the cervix being ripened and opened, the contractions are desired to help you push your baby out of your womb.
