What is induction of labour?
How does the labour induction work?
The most common method to induce the labour is by administration of a medication called oxytocin (Syntocinon). This works only if your cervix is already ripened, therefore cervical ripening before labour induction is required.
Oxytocin causes contractions, these will with time come more often and become stronger as the labour begins and progresses. Along with oxytocin, many times your doctor or midwife may break your waters, which allows the baby’s head to push down on the cervix while the oxytocin causes contractions.
Together this process will help to advance your labour. But for the labour induction, first the cervix needs to be ripened!
